That’s the date of our exclusive dining event here at THOMPSON St Albans, a family run independent restaurant, trying to offer something special to those eating out in St Albans, which will be co-hosted by the Padstow-based star, together with chef and owner Phil Thompson. Together they have created a menu which each chef will cook and prepare on the evening in a sumptuous, four-course tasting menu.
The proprietor of two of Cornwall’s favourite restaurant destinations, Paul Ainsworth at No6 and Rojanos In The Square, plus hotel, The Padstow Townhouse, Paul learned his craft with the legendary Gary Rhodes. His many awards and accolades include a Michelin Star, 7/10 in the Good Food Guide and multiple AA Rosettes. He has worked with chefs at the top of their game including Gordon Ramsey and Marcus Wareing, and is a constant TV presence, appearing on shows such as Saturday Kitchen, Masterchef, Yes Chef and Royal Recipes. In 2011, he appeared with our very own Phil Thompson on 2011’s BBC2 show, The Great British Menu.
Paul is really excited about the special night and commented: “One of the many incredible things about doing Great British Menu is that you get to meet wicked geezers like the brilliantly talented Phil Thompson and his amazing fiancée Marianne. They are giving me the honour of coming to cook at what I understand is the best restaurant in St Albans. I can’t wait to bring a piece of Cornwall here for the night.”
A luxurious menu
We will begin the evening with canapés on arrival, followed by a four-course tasting menu; Paul Ainsworth will cook the starter and main course, Phil Thompson the middle course and dessert. The event will be fun and interactive, with both chefs introducing their dishes throughout the evening. If you’re after a sneak preview of what’s on offer, we can exclusively reveal that Paul will bring a Cornish influence to the evening. To compliment Paul and the South West, Phil Thompson will be serving up Poached Fillet of Line Caught Cornish Turbot for his fish course. You can see the rest of the evening’s menu here.
It’s no secret that Phil Thompson holds Paul in high esteem. “Paul is regarded as one of the best chefs in this country, not only for his food style but also for his manner, the way in which he runs his kitchen, changing the perception of Head Chefs and the industry generally,” he says. “He is also one of the chefs that has put Cornwall on the map as a culinary destination.”
