Have you seen my Terrace?
By Phil Thompson
The term ‘alfresco’ originated in the Mid-18th Century and comes from the Italian “in the cool air”, and whilst it’s no longer in use in Italian, it’s certainly a phrase and a style of dining that has been adopted in the UK during the last few decades.
In fact, alfresco dining is something us Brits have made an art of. If you enjoy dining outside, THOMPSON St Albans can offer an idyllic terrace to enjoy lunch or an evening meal whilst soaking up the warm sunshine and our relaxed fine dining experience.
Our terrace is a great way to enjoy peaceful outdoor dining in the heart of St Albans, just two minutes away from the hustle and bustle of the busy city centre. It’s a wonderful sun trap and we have seven tables seating up to 20 guests in our terrace area.
Since the restaurant became THOMPSON St Albans back in November 2013, some four years ago now, the plants and shrubs have become well established and you’ll enjoy the delightful scents of honeysuckle and jasmine gently hanging in the air on a balmy summer day. It’s a tranquil spot to enjoy our fresh, seasonal summer menu, along with one of our seasonal summer cocktails, a glass of bubbles or wine, or even a glass of iced water infused with mint and cucumber.
Our New Summer Menu
Our summer menu offers guests beautiful flavour combinations. Whether its crisp, fresh vegetables grown by my father-in-law John in his allotment, or the variety of beautiful line-caught Cornish fish we serve, it’s the taste of summer everyone craves during those wonderful sunny months of the year we all crave and love so much when they finally get here. We have wonderful, juicy berries such as strawberries, raspberries and gooseberries, homemade ice creams and sorbets, as well as beautifully chilled vanilla parfait with mint-marinated strawberries. Whetting your appetite yet? Why not complement your meal with one of our seasonal cocktails showcasing summer flavours at their best, or enjoy chilled wine or bubbly either by the glass or bottle, set in ice buckets, making that special glass of… just a little bit more amazing.
Our terrace tables are laid with crisp white linen table cloths and you’ll be able to relax and enjoy our peaceful setting, with the gentle hum of guests chatting and the staff serving customers in an attentive but not invasive manner.
Guests can enjoy our terrace for pre-dinner drinks and canapés for special occasions, weddings, anniversaries, celebrations and birthdays, or simply for a drink outside before dining with us. Our terrace becomes exclusive once the conservatory is booked out. Our conservatory is fully air-conditioned making it a cool, comfortable, shaded environment, to relax on those precious sunny days, without sitting directly in the sun. Our conservatory also seats 20 guests and has seven tables, with three French doors that open out onto the terrace. Guests who are seated in the conservatory can have the best of both worlds.
Back in the summer of 2015, the terrace was also the location for my Ice Bucket Challenge… in my best Batman pants and chef’s apron… only!
We are very proud of our beautiful terrace and the quaint and tranquil setting, right in the centre of our much-loved St Albans.
Take a look at my Summer Menu and give us a call to book your table.
