Easter Sunday in St Albans

What are your plans for Easter Sunday? Whether you prefer to spend it celebrating in church, outside hunting for chocolate eggs or a family Sunday lunch, there are plenty of community events happening in St Albans on Sunday 21st April 2019 to help you mark the day.

The origins of Easter Sunday

Have you ever wondered why we celebrate Easter with eggs and bunnies?  Although Easter is a Christian festival marking the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, its position in the calendar coincides with ancient pagan rituals celebrating springtime, so our modern Easter celebrations are a mixture of both these influences. Hot cross buns to remember the Crucifixion, and chocolate eggs to signify rebirth.

People typically celebrate Easter Sunday with a traditional Easter Sunday lunch of roast lamb and spring vegetables – and of course, with the obligatory chocolate Easter egg overindulgence! Easter Sunday is a very special day; churches adorned with beautiful decorations and Easter flowers, such as daffodils and tulips – a visual sign of celebration after the sombre austerity of Lent. In the community, traditional Easter rituals include decorating hens’ eggs, wearing Easter bonnets, and even egg-rolling contests!
