THOMPSON St Albans is a relaxed, fine dining restaurant, ideal for any type of function or celebration, with a number of private dining options depending on the size of your group.  The first-floor restaurant dining area can accommodate up to 50 diners.  Our beautiful light and airy conservatory can seat up to 28 guests, with French doors opening onto the terrace, offering additional capacity for a further 20 guests with exclusive use when the conservatory is booked.  We understand that every event is different and will take account of all your requirements to ensure your special occasion is exactly as you wish.

We offer private venue hire for events and functions in St Albans. Whether you are planning a wedding reception, christening, anniversary, birthday, retirement party, organising a family gathering or get-together, or hosting a business meeting or corporate event, there are a number of private dining options to choose from.

Weddings

Treat your guests to a dining experience to remember, in a beautiful setting here in our fine dining restaurant. Our charming courtyard and conservatory are perfect for summer weddings; alternatively, book our upstairs restaurant to enjoy an indoor celebration.

Special occasions

With exclusive use of a private room for your special occasion at THOMPSON St Albans, we’ll help you celebrate in style with fine wines, delicious cocktails, wonderful culinary creations and immaculate service. We can host events of any size; a restaurant take-over is also possible, depending on your needs.

Corporate functions

Perfect for a business lunch, meeting room hire or all-day event, complete with high-quality catering, combined with discreet and impeccable service.

Corporate meetings: we offer a full range of options for all your business meeting needs, including breakfast, lunch and dinner, together with tea, coffee and pastries throughout the day.

Champagne reception & canapés

Please talk to a member of the team when booking your special day about a Champagne reception as your guests arrive, allowing them to feel special, welcome and relaxed, with time to chat and mingle before your meal. We offer 3/5 canapés per person at £6/£9 per head and a variety of Champagnes.

Cocktail on arrival or pre-dinner drink

Please arrive half and hour before the time of your reservation to enjoy a well-deserved, pre-dinner drink in our lounge bar with your guests, giving you time to mingle and perhaps enjoy some delicious canapés. We offer 3/5 canapés per person at £6/£9 per head and a variety of Champagnes.

Cheeseboard to share

Either before dessert, the French way, or you may like to finish your meal with a cheeseboard and perhaps some port or a sweet wine. We offer cheese at £5 per person on a shared cheeseboard, served with crackers, homemade chutney, celery and apple sorbet.

Tea, coffee and petit fours

Enjoy a warming hot beverage at the end of your meal and Phil Thompson’s homemade petit fours, which change with the seasons much like our menus. Sample selection: Earl Grey fudge, hazelnut financier, rhubarb and custard macaron.

Side vegetables

Enjoy seasonal vegetables at £6.50 per portion, truffled potato at £7.50 per person. 1 portion between 2 recommended with either our A La Carte or 7 course Tasting Menu.

Our facilities

  • Corporate meetings: we offer a full range of options for all your business lunch or meeting needs, including breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as tea, coffee and pastries throughout the day.
  • Outdoor area / al fresco dining: available to those booking our 28-capacity conservatory for private dining. The additional 20-seater space is a quaint courtyard adorned with honeysuckle, trailing ivy and a variety of other greenery.
  • Private dining: includes our conservatory and upstairs dining areas.
  • Accessibility: we have a completely wheelchair-accessible ground-floor area including toilet facilities.

Function booking points to note

  • We ask for a £50 per person deposit for all reservations,
  • We welcome large party reservations of 12 or more on a private hire basis,
  • We may ask for a minimum spend to hire any of our rooms privately,
  • A discretionary 12.5% service charge will be added to your bill,
  • Please advise us of any special dietary requirements at the point of booking,
  • Please may we ask that you advise your party of the arrival time only, half an hour before the time of your table.  To ensure an efficient service for your party and our other guests on the occasion, it is important that we seat you at the time of your booking. This way you can make your menu choices in our relaxed lounge bar area and enjoy a pre-dinner drink
